The phrase Allahu Akbar means “Allah (God) is the Greatest”. It means nothing can be mightier or greater than Allah (God) neither can anything supersede Him in any way. In Islam, Allahu Akbar is a phrase widely and very frequently used in the prayer and ‘adhan’ ( the call for prayer ) along with many other occasions . Muslims also express a number of their emotions (e.g. happiness, praise of God, passion ) by using it and also use it for various other reasons as well. It is also used by Muslims in times of their extreme stress and euphoria. It is also used to admit and acclaim the mightiness and greatness of God. By using this phrase muslims also declare and testify that there is only one God which is greatest by every possible meaning of the word.

In every prayer in Islam, Allahu Akbar is used as an opening declaration. The Holy Prophet, Muhammad (Peace be upon him) prescribed ‘Allahu Akbar’ as a slogan for the Islamic mujahids (the fighters who fight to protect and defend the religion of Islam and its values). It is also used when the animals are slaughtered to declare that its only Allah who has enabled Muslims to benefit from these animals as a source of food .

In the word, ‘Allahu Akbar’, Allah means, the One (God), and ‘akbar’ means the Greatest or the Mightiest. It is used in Islam to express the supremacy of Allah (God), the One. To declare that Allah is the greatest and He has created the universe and that He is the only One who runs all the affairs of the universe.

It is important to note here that ‘Takbeer’ is the name of this expression whereas ‘Allahu Akbar’ is the phrase itself.

‘Takbeer’ is used in flags of some countries. For example in the flag of ‘Iraq’, ‘Allahu Akbar’ is written on the flag’s centre. Whereas in the flag of ‘Iran’ it is used for 22 times alongside the borders of the central white strip.
