Only a couple of days after the world witnessed a huge swarm of pilgrims gathering to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the world prepares itself for another major pilgrim demonstration as Shias all across the globe gear up to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain – the grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
Ashura is a term used for the first ten days of Muharram; the first month of the Islamic calendar. Shias mourn the slaying of the revered Imam Hussain through out the ten days but the emotions are immensified in the last two days.
More than routine security measures have been adopted across the Muslim world as the respective governments face a tough moment in not being able to stop the pilgrims from performing their rituals and, on the other hand, ensuring that wrong doers do not use this occasion as a tool for terrorism.
Iraq is the holiest place for the Shia community. Iraq is home to the city of Karbala; the ground where Imam Hussain was martyred. Despite government initiatives, explosions and bombings have infiltrated pilgrim camps and gatherings. Ashura death tolls have hit double figures while the number of injured are five to six times more than the fatalities.
Things aren’t looking bright for Tehran either. Ashura processions have witnessed a stand off between the opposition parties and security personnel. Reports of fatalities have floated in from the Persian state as well. At the moment, fewer than ten people are believed to have expired in the protests with more reports of injuries coming in till now.
