Barophiles

Also called Piezophiles, Barophiles are a life form – found both in macro and microscopic forms – that flourish in extreme and unusually high pressure conditions. Some places you might expect to find Barophiles could be deep in the ocean beds (as deep as 10 thousand meters) and the very distant underground.

A member of the Extremophiles family, Barophiles have further been divided into three sub-categories; extreme Barophiles, Barotolerant and Barophilic. The first sub-category, extreme Barophiles, thrive optimally at pressures of 700 atmospheres (7,000 feet below the ocean surface) and more. The second, Barotolerant, have been observed to survive at 400 atmospheres (4,000 feet below). While the last classification, Barophilic, fall in between the former two and live at a pressure of 500 to 600 atmospheres (5,000 feet below the water surface).

Contrary to human beings who start facing problems at extreme pressures, Barophiles start facing similar problems in low pressure areas. Amplification in pressure usually results in a decline in volume. Since they can’t withstand low pressure conditions, they have also been termed “obligatory Barophiles” i.e. they have no alternative but to dwell in high pressure conditions.

The lofty pressure and chilly temperature have, for now, been held responsible for the Barophiles’ slow rate of reproduction. Moreover, various hypotheses say they reproduce either asexually or through sexual means.

Not much can be said about what exactly this life form “does”. But various research facilities have scientists working towards the answer by using the unique enzymes and fatty acids fabricated by extremophiles in the make up of food items.
