Because the Night Belongs to Lovers

It is a lyrics of the song ‘Because the Night”. The song was released in 1978 as a single by the ‘Patti Smith Group’. The song was written by ‘Smith’ and ‘Bruce Springsteen’ and was taken from album Easter.

The song proved to be hit, rising to the # 13 on ‘Billboard Hot 100′ chart and it helped a lot to boost the sales of Easter. It is the best known song of Smith’s catalog. In 1987, this song by ‘Patti Smith Group’ was ranked # 116 on ‘NME Magazine’ list of “The Top 150 Singles of All Time”.

The song was originally recorded by ‘Bruce Springsteen’ during the sessions for his “Darkness on the Edge of Town’” album. At that time the “Patti Smith Group” was also working on the ‘Easter’ in a next door studio where the bands were also exchanging the tapes. With the male centered lyrics and a Latin feel, original version of this song didn’t find a proper place on Springsteen album. So Smith took this song and recast the whole song from the female perspective and included on the ‘Easter’ thus becoming the album’s first single release.

The first commercially released recording of ‘Springsteen version’ of this song was eventually included on the ‘Live/1975-85′.

The song was also performed live by Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen and Bono & U 2 at ‘Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’ on twenty fifth anniversary concert at ‘Madison Square Garden’ on October 30, 2009. The song has also been performed by many others on different occasions.
