Cabin in the Sky

Cabin in the Sky is like the ancient version of modern day’s Sweeney Todd the Devil Barber; only that the story line differs but is similar to the extent of finding redemption in life in the hereafter. One of the most prominent elements of Cabin in the Sky is that the cast was composed of African Americans all the way through. That was something which you almost never got to witness back in those days. And perhaps that is the reason why Cabin in the Sky is so popular on Martin Luther King Day; the African American community would want to celebrate their achievements and accomplishments in various facades of the American culture & heritage.

The story line revolves around the troubled Little Joe (played by Dooley Wilson). Like a drug addict, Little Joe is hooked on gambling and the same habit results in his slaying. Indebted to various lenders at the time of his demise, Little Joe is put on a probationary 6 month period to convert his essence and become eligible to walk

through the pearly gates of Paradise. If he fails to do so, he shall witness the sad end of living in Hell for eternity.

Cabin in the Sky became a classic masterpiece and delivered more than a hundred and fifty performances. Its popularity resulted in the musical act being taken up for a movie flick project. The movie did even better than the predecessor and won a nomination for the revered Academy Award. The DVD version became available in ‘06.
