John Frederick Dryer, known as “Fred Dryer” to his fans worldwide, was a prominent defensive football player in the NFL (National Football League, USA). He was born to Genevieve Nell Clark and Charles F. Dryer on the 6th of July 1946 in Hawthorne, a small city in the southwest of Los Angeles County, California.

Dryer began playing football at high school in Lawndale, California. He enrolled at El Camino Junior College after high school, where, in 1966, he was awarded Athlete of the Year for his outstanding performance on the field. This was the same year he earned the award of Junior College All-American. Dryer subsequently transferred to San Diego State University. He was nevertheless included in 1988 as a charter member in the El Camino College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Fred Dryer played a total of 176 games during a period of 13 years being with the NFL team. He is also the only player on the NFL who scored two safeties in a single game.

After retiring from football in the early 1980s, Dryer took a shot at acting – he became well known as an onscreen actor, particularly for his performance in the 1980s TV Series Hunter, a crime/cop drama, in which he played Lieutenant Rick Hunter. Some of his other prominent screen performances include the action movie Death before Dishonor and the 1990s TV Series Land’s End, in which he played 14 episodes as Mike Land, the protagonist.

Dryer married co-actress Tracy Vaccaro in 1983, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1988.

Today Dryer has a permanent home in Los Angeles, California, and runs Fred Dryer Productions, his own production corporation.
