Human Genome Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ: HGSI), after the announcement of positive results related to the development of its lupus drug, is up about 34% in pre market.

According to the announcement by Human Genome Science, the HGSI and the GlaxoSmithKline P.L.C. (GSK) together was in the second phase of 2 important Phase-3 trials in the “Seropositive patients” with SLE (systematic lupus erythematosus), where BENLYSTA ™, belimumab, has the primary ending point in BLISS 76. The 52 weeks BLISS 76 study results showed that the standard of care of 10mg/kg belimumab plus, achieved an improvement (statistically significant) in the patient “response rate” as it is measure through SLE “Responder Index” at the Week 52, compared to that of placebo plus “standard of care”.

The results of this study have also found belimumab to be well tolerated generally. Thomas Watkins, the President & CEO, HGS, has said that the results of BLISS 76 has confirmed their view of BENLYSTA ™ having a potential of becoming the very first new drug (approved) in last many years for those people who are living with the systemic lupus. He further stated that it is their great achievement to bring the BENLYSTA ™ to the current point and they are proud of it. He disclosed that they are planning to submit the marketing applicants by June, 2010, after necessary discussion with world’s regulatory authorities. He further stated that their collaboration with GSK will continue for advancing the drug to market for benefiting the patients who have a significant need for it.
