Most parts of Brazil and some Paraguay parts plunged into a complete darkness on Tuesday, November 11, 2009, after a sudden shut down of The Brazilian Dam, Itaipu Dam. The large part of Brazil and Paraguay, a state in the neighborhoods of Brazil, is supplied with electricity which is produced alone by Itaipu Dam. Itaipu Dam is not only the Brazil’s largest dam but is also amongst the largest dams of the world. The power cutoff happened due to mechanical failure in the dam and this situation prevailed for over couple of hours in Brazil’s two largest cities Sau Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The authorities have reported that collapse resulted into an electricity cut-off of about 17,000 megawatts. About 10 states of Brazil felt the impact of the electricity cut off.

Itaipu dam is located on boarders of the Paraguay state and Brazil. The dam is the second largest dam in the world which produces hydro electricity. About twenty percent electricity in Brazil is supplied through this dam. The interruption in power supply caused a serious problem in the area because the area is depended largely on hydro-power only for its electricity needs.

However the cause of problem in the dam is has not yet been discovered as stated by Edson Lobao, Brazilian Energy Minister. However, the highly intensive storm or unfavorable phenomena in the atmosphere may be the cause of this problem.

The incident caused serious problem on the roads as a result of heavy pile up of traffic due to traffic signals switch off, furthermore it lead to serious problems in hospitals which were then dependent on generators during the incident. The Brazilian government took various emergency measures to avoid any mishap.
