John Basilone

HBO is airing a miniseries “the Pacific” that is based on the memoirs of US Marines. The memoirs were written about their experiences during the World War II. The marines were deputed in the Pacific region where they had encounters with the Japanese. The 8th episode (aired on Sunday) of the series narrated the story of John Basilone who had died at Iwo Jima while containing a Japanese attack.

John Basilone was born in New York to parents of Italian decent. He had not finished high school when enlisted for US army. He completed three year service with Army in Philippines and returned home but again enlisted himself to US Marines. After brief training he was sent to the war zone. He fought at Guantanamo Bay and Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. He restrained the enemy with a unit of only 15 members. Thirteen of his men died of enemy shots and the unit was reduced to two men. He kept the enemy engaged with his machine gun and pistol and didn’t sleep for three days. He received “medal of honor” for his bravery.

He returned to United States and toured the country to raise money for war. He returned to war after several requests. He married a US Marine Lena Mae in 1944.

John Basilone was sent to Iwo Jima for the last combat where he destroyed enemy’s defending garrison. He led his company diligently guiding them uncovered. He was hit by mortar shell while exposed to enemy and died of the explosion. He fought heroically at Iwo Jima and received a posthumous Navy Cross.
