John Thune

John R. Thune is the junior “U.S. Senator” from South Dakota State. In 1996, Thune won the election for the “House of Representatives” where he served for 3 terms. Previously Thune served as legislative assistant to James Abdnor, a U.S. Senator and also worked in Small Business Administration’s Reagan Administration division. In 2002 United States Senate race, he challenged the Democrat, Tim Johson but remained unsuccessful by few votes. Two years later, he won and got elected for the Senate by defeating, Tom Daschle, a Democrat and “Senate Minority Leader” at that time.

He was later elected at large seat of South Dakota in the “U.S. States House of Representatives”. Again in 1998 and 2000, he won reelections. When term limits were under discussion, he supported and he promised that he will not serve the House for more than 3 terms.

Thune served as a ‘lobbyist’ for Dakota ‘Minnesota and Eastern Railroad’ from 2002 to 2004.

In the Senate race of 2004, Thune’s race became the most expensive race in the Senate where about $ 30 million were spent. In South Dakota’s history, it was probably the expensive most. This expensive Senate race attracted the national media at a wide scale.

He was elected for the “Chief Deputy Whip” of GOP. Thune’s leading role as a US Senator was to formulate the energy policy. He struggled hard to pass the energy bill in 2005 and 2007 in Senate. Thune has been supportive of wind energy and ethanol, wind widely linked with his State in general and his town in particular.

Thune is well known for his friendly, nice and modest personality.
