Krystal Surles

An amazing story of valor, survival and perseverance; the story is of (then) 10 year old Krystal Surles’ who had not only witnessed the slaying of her good friend Katy (Kaylene) Harris but also been attacked by the same monster with almost a foot long butcher knife.

It all started when Krystal Surles and her younger sister Marque (then 7 years old) were staying with the Harris brood while waiting for their parents to catch up with them. The two older girls, Katy and Krystal Surles opted to sleep on the bunk bed furnished in an aloof room. That very night, Tommy Lynn Sells, broke into the girls’ room through a window and went for Katy who was sleeping on the lower bunk. The noise and commotion stirred as Katy resisted woke Krystal Surles from her snooze and she stared with terrified eyes as Tommy Sells slit Katy’s throat in front of her eyes. Unfortunately, the assailant spotted Krystal staring at him and made his move for her. As soon as he got near her, Tommy Sells used the same butcher knife to gash Krystal’s throat and took off.

Knowing she wasn’t ready to part from this world, Krystal Surles gathered all her strength and reached for help as the blood gushed from her incision and flooded the entire bedroom leaving a trail to her rescuers’ house. After spending time in the hospital, Krystal was able to identify the killer from the police sketches drawn by a forensic expert.

Contradictory to normal practice, Tommy Sells immediately came in with the police, volunteered to rearrange Katy’s murder and confessed to other murders he had committed all over the States.
