Matis Tribe is reported to live in separate two villages in Brazil and is an indigenous group of people having a population of around 290. The tribe lives in the “Vale do Javari Indigenous Park”, far west Brazil. The area is spread over 32000 sq. miles. The tribe’s occupation has been agriculture and hunting. FANAI, a Brazilian agency approached the tribe at first time in 1975-1976. The FUNAI people started visiting the Matis Tribe villages after two years in 1978 when the fear amongst the Matis Tribe men came to an end about the FUNAI. In 1980s, the western diseased spread into the tribe and a sizeable population of the tribe was devastated with these diseases. The diseases proved to be very serious for the tribes due to non availability of any remedial measure and lack of immunity against the diseases. Three of the villages of the tribe were lost dung this decade and are now completely vacated; however these are currently being visited by the tribesmen for harvesting.
The various demographic changes over a period of time and a long time as well as the Matis’s first contact about thirty years back has brought some changes in the Matis Tribe with an updated understanding of various surrounding events and changes. Although the old Matis Tribe are still conservative and traditionalists and prefer to live in their old life style, the new generation of Matis Tribe is well contacted with the modern Brazil particularly for education and schooling and their ties with the outer world are increasing day by day.
It has been reported recently that the Matis Tribe have located the nine survivors after the plane crash near the Rive Itui and afterwards they contacted the air force authorities.
