Mermaid Parade

Summer season begins with the people of Coney Island celebrating and rejoicing by doing Mermaid Parade. This parade traditionally has been done every year before the start of the summer season. It takes place on the first Saturday just before the start of the summer regardless of the weather.

It is called Mermaid Parade as thousands of women wear mermaid costumes and it attracts a lot of public and spectators. Major attraction of public is cause of nudity as most women are topless during the parade. Lot of people comes from different parts to celebrate the parade, it includes those who have visited the Coney Island and also those who want to escape from the summer heat at the beaches of the Island. The parade consists of floats, different sort of vehicles, individuals, groups, all kinds of mermaids and sea creatures. The parade also features a mermaid queen and king.

The nudity seen in the parade is somewhat legal in the New York as it is a law that women can be topless in the public places. People love to be at this parade in the form of mermaid or even a spectator. It is the most celebrated event of the city. The parade was first started in 1983 and since then it takes place every year. This year Mermaid Parade is going to be held at 2 pm on June 19, 2010. After the parade an after party is arranged for the parade’s participants which will be held from 6 pm onwards and feature live music, and on stage performances of the brightest stars.
