Nottoway Plantation

Situated in White Castle, Louisiana and also referred to as the “Nottoway Plantation House”, Nottoway Plantation is an American history landmark symbolizing (in many ways) the conception and completion of the ‘American Dream’ for the Randolphs. The final structure was finished in 1859 courtesy of the wealthy businessman John Hampton Randolph. Mr. Randolph is said to have built this mammoth dwelling out of love of his family and his liking for openness.

The mansion was completed over a span of 4 years under the supervision of the widely popular architect Henry Howard. Howard was considered to be one of the best architects in and around New Orleans during the 1800’s. When he was brought on board by Randolph for the project, nearby dwellers knew they should expect nothing short of a “Spectacular”.

Nottoway Plantation’s inception began in 1855 when Cypress trees started being gathered to provide for the mansion’s woodwork. Slaves baked handmade bricks for the same. Completed at a magnanimous grand total of 80 thousand ($ 80,000), John Randolph spent an additional $4,000 on the construction’s carpeting.

Furnishing an interior on 3 floor levels, the Nottoway Plantation had a ten pin bowling alley on the first floor and holds sixty four rooms, twenty six closets, twenty two square columns, 3 toilets and six staircases – apart from the two granite stair flights at its entrance.

The mansion was sold by John Randolph’s wife after his death in the latter 1880’s. It is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places since the year 1980.
