Numerous Marines bring back various things as souvenirs from lands they spend varied durations of their lives at. Some find lucky charm rocks, maybe a fistful of red and golden dessert sand. Major Brian Dennis ran past all the “conventionals” and brought back home an additional family member – Nubs the dessert dog from Iraq.
Stationed to patrol the border along Iraq and Syria in pursuit of insurgents, Major Dennis and his unit became acquainted with the wire furred pooch and his pack on one of their missions. The dessert hounds inhabited one of the forts on the Iraqi side of the border. The pooch was dubbed “Nubs” in an attribute to his ears which were probably slashed off while he was a pup.
Although the hound did not take much notice of the Major, he did manage to surprise Dennis and all the other members of the Marine unit when the dog wandered into their camp 48 hours after they had been relocated 70 miles away from their last assigned region. It was below freezing point and the German shepherd / Collie cross appeared to be absolutely drained.
As per military regulations, dogs are not allowed to be kept inside army camps. Therefore, Major Dennis Brian decided to have Nubs sent back home to the States since he definitely did not want to lose his newly acquired “family”.
Committed to providing Nubs a good life, Brian Dennis had Nubs sent to San Diego through his friends in Jordan. Nubs is presently undergoing a vaccination treatment where after he will be reunited with his owner who has already gotten permission to keep the pooch by his side at work.
