The Wal-Mart Stores Inc (the leading retailer in the world) is closing its 10 branches of Sam’s Club in different locations of the United States. According to its website, Sam’s club closing will take place near the end of January 2010. Sam s club closing its stores located in Nampa, Louisville, Rolling Meadows, Houston, Sacramento, Irvine and Clay. With Sam’s Club closing almost 1500 employees will be affected, which is really sad. However, Sam’s Club President and CEO Brian Cornell said that Wal-Mart will find the employment opportunities for its affected employees in other Wal-Mart stores and pay them additional benefits and pay to make this process smooth. According to him, the Sam s club closing is decided because these stores are not performing up to the financial expectations.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is the largest American chain of discount stores, super centers and neighborhood markets. It is the world’s largest corporation by income with $ 404 billion revenue in the year 2009. Wal-Mart

headquarters is in Bentonville, Arkansas, United States. Sam’s club is a chain of Wal-Mart warehouse clubs and allows wholesale of groceries, general merchandise. Sam’s club is the subsidiary of Wall-Mart and they usually offer membership to their customers. Purchases can be done by a non member but there is certain amount of discount on items for those who purchase the membership. Sam’s club is basically opened to facilitate owners of small business to purchase quantities in bulk on discount. That’s why Sam’s Club is opened early in the morning especially for business owners and it was named “Sam’s Wholesale Club’ initially with the tag line “We are in business for small business”.

No matter what are the causes behind this decision of Sam s Club Closing, its consequences will affect a large number of employees and their families and it’s not a happy situation for them.
