As SEPTA’s biggest transport employees union goes on strike after negotiations with the transit agency for a fresh agreement failed to materialize, passengers have been left confused, wandering, panicked and finding alternatives.
According to transit officials, train service is the best choice for passengers to travel in & around Philadelphia in the current scenario. Officials broadcasted that few Delaware County buses, 101 and 102 Media & Sharon Hill trolleys, the Norristown high speed line and regional rail lines will continue service according to schedule even though passengers should be patient and wary of interruptions, delays and heavier traveler traffic.
The strike announcement went public early Tuesday morning at 3 AM. The proclamation came from Transport Workers Union Local 234. The Mayor did not hold back from expressing his disappointment, telling reporters the situation was something he could not understand.
Majority of the services provided in Philadelphia through SEPTA will come to a halt as a consequence of the strike since the union consists of more than 5 thousand mechanics, subway& trolley operators and bus drivers.
The Mayor and Governor were not the only ones left disheartened. Workers who rely on SEPTA for daily transportation in order to reach their jobs voiced frustrations as well. Moreover, in addition to workers, students who use SEPTA to go to school will also suffer a blow. And to make matters a little asking for the youth, the Philadelphia School District’s Superintendent said no alternate transport facility will be provided to the students while school operations will continue according to schedule.
Union workers currently demand a 4 percent income raise and no addition to their respective health care treatment.
