Even after so many years movie “The Americanization of Emily” is considered to be one of the best movies that has been produced on war. The Americanization of Emily came out in 1964 and was a mixture of comedy and action based on WWII till the invasion of Normandy. Emmy award winner James Garner and multi prized Julie Andrews consider it their best film done.

The movie kicks off showing the dog robber Lt. Charlie Madison (Garner), a PA to the US Admiral W. Jessup (Douglas) who has been assigned to provide charming English females to him and his fellow army officers who are posted on the best positions.

The Admiral Jessup is a man who has undergone affliction ever since his mistress left the world; he commits a blunder while formulating a plot so that the US Navy does not get overpowered by the Air Force or the Army on “D-Day”. In the midst of this plan he hits upon the idea that the first person to die on the Beach of Omaha would be a boater. He decides to do a movie so that the facts be maintained and would then bury the dead man in the tomb of an unfamiliar army man.

In between all this Lt. develops feelings for a widow Emily (Julie A.), the female also finds herself attracted towards the officer. But things take a u-turn for Charlie when his friend Commander Cunnings (J. Coburn) repels their love and veneries behind Madison on the beach. In doing so a shell from the German arm kills Charlie, making him the first casualty on Omaha. Soon the chicken turns into a super man and his snaps appear on the front page of magazines.

His death affects everyone. Emily loses someone she had an attachment with again, Charlie regrets the loss of his assistant and Cunnings is joyous that he has created a legend.

The end of Americanization of Emily is quite awkward when it shows that Charlie is not dead, and is quite furious at his friend and musters up courage to tell the valid narration of the incident on Emily’s advice.
