The Color of Friendship

The Color of friendship is a 2000 television film written by Paris Qualles, produced by Kevin Hooks and Christopher Morgan. The color of friendship was distributed by Disney channel and it was aired on Disney channel in 2000. The cast includes Lindsey Haun, Perry Johnson, Carl Lumbly and Shadia Simmons.

The movie is based on two girls who belong to different ethnicity and they were friends. Mahree (Lindsay Haun) was from United States and Piper (Shadia Simmons) was from South Africa. The movie though released on Disney Channel and it appeared that it is meant for children, but it discusses more serious issues like racism and values of friendship. Mahree belongs to South Africa; she is white and lives with her parents and a younger brother. They live in the system of apartheid (an official policy of racial segregation common in South Africa). Mahree’s father was strong believer of racism and he was happy being part of apartheid. Mahree being unaware of all this, was happy to be a friend of the maid who was black and was dissatisfied to be a part of apartheid. Piper on the other hand was a black girl who lives in Washington with her parents and two brothers. Mahree and Piper met when they were indulge in an exchange program in which Piper had to host an African girl.

Mahree thought that a white family will host her and Piper was thinking that a black girl will be her guest. It was a great setback for Mahree, but gradually they became friends and the story continues.

Though there were a few mistakes in the movie but still “The Color of Friendship” has won Emmy Award, NAACP Award, WGA Award, and Young Artist Award.
