Tun Tavern was an inn in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which was used as an early or founding meeting place for the number of famous people groups at that time. United States Marine Corps had also traditionally considered this place for their first recruitment center. Tun Tavern is also being considered as the birthplace of America’s Masonic teaching.
First Tavern was built in 1685 by Samuel Carpenter. It was built at the intersection of Tun Alley and Water Street and this place is known as Penn’s Landing today. Its name was decided both for the “tun” an Old English word and the alley for the beer’s container. “Red Hot Beef Steak Club of Peggy Mullan” was a restaurant which was added to the tavern in 1740s.
This Tun Tavern was used as the first meeting place by several organizations at that time in which St. George Society’s (currently known as “Sons of the Society of St. George) first meeting was included which was held in 1720. This Society was founded to assist those needy people who arrived in new colony as it was a charitable organization.
First meeting of the Grand Lodge of the Masonic Temple was also held in the Tun Tavern in 1732. St. Andrew’s Society was also the same society like St. George’s Society worked on the same cause to support those needy Englishmen who arrived in the new colony and this Tavern was also their founding point in 1747. Today Tun Tavern does not exist as in 1781 it was burned down and Interstate 95 has occupied its original location.
