WNDU

WNDU (TV) is South Bend (Indiana) based television station. WNDU TV is ‘NBC television’ network’s affiliate. The transmitter of WNDU is located in ‘South Bend’. It broadcasts on ‘Channel 42′ in HDTV and in addition it simulates a local image of Doppler radar. It has digital only broadcast since February 16, 2009 (11.59 pm).

WNDU-TV started airing on Channel 46 on July 15, 1955. WNDU-TV was owned by ‘University of the Notre Dame’ through its subsidiary ‘Michiana Television Corporation’. Later on in 1957, WNDU-TV was moved to the analog ‘Channel 16′. Since its beginning WNDU-TV has been an affiliate of NBC. The schedule of early broadcast of WNDU-TV included the programs such as ‘Romper Room’ and the telecast of ‘Notre Dame’s’ football game. It also aired Sesame Street (non-commercial) from year 1970 until 1974 when WNIT satiation (a member station of PBS) came on air. From early 1980s to 2006, a helicopter was used by WNDU-TV for the news broadcasts.

The increased focus of WNDU-TV on news led the station to stop the airing of cartoons on Saturday morning in 1994 and started a ‘three-hour’ newscast.

The station was sold to ‘Gray Television’ by the ‘University of the Notre Dame’ on March 5, 2006 for a cash of $85 millions. The university has planned to put this fund into ‘endowment fund’.

The channel also became controversial under the ownership of Notre Dame when it did not opt to air some of the NBC’s shows due to some concerns on their contents like ‘Coupling’ a British sitcom and ‘God, the Devil and Bob’, an animated series.
